Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining is a widely used histological technique that employs two distinct stains: hematoxylin and eosin. Hematoxylin imparts a purplish-blue coloration to cell nuclei, while eosin stains the extracellular matrix and cytoplasm in varying shades of pink. This differential staining allows pathologists to clearly distinguish between the nuclear and cytoplasmic components of a cell, facilitating the identification of cellular structures and tissue architecture.
Papanicolaou (Pap) staining is a diagnostic technique employed to differentiate cells in smear preparations from various bodily secretions. These specimens may include gynecological smears (such as Pap smears), sputum, brushings, washings, urine, cerebrospinal fluid, abdominal fluid, pleural fluid, synovial fluid, seminal fluid, fine needle aspiration samples, tumor touch preparations, and other materials containing cellular components. Pap staining is a highly reliable method and is widely utilized in the screening for cervical cancer in gynecology, owing to its effectiveness in detecting abnormal cellular changes.
